Workshop Summary

Every year the Regional Chamber provides more than 200 in-school Employer Education & Training Connection workshops to thousands of students across Genesee County.

These workshops are provided at no cost to the schools during the school day. The Workshop Summary below provides a list of the types of services available. A Workshop Request Form and Event Support Guidelines document are also available below.

2010-2011 WORKSHOP SUMMARIES

Classroom Workshops are educational tools that provide students with valuable insight for their career objectives. These engaging and interactive workshops are held in the comfort of the student’s own school during a normal school day.  

There is no cost to schools or students participating in the workshop program.

Business Etiquette

Business etiquette is fundamental to getting and keeping a job. This workshop introduces students to basic business etiquette, and the importance of behaving appropriately in the workplace.

Topics covered in this workshop include:

  • Greeting a potential employer
  • Proper handshake
  • The appropriate walk, talk and business look
  • Online and telephone protocols
  • Basic life/employability skills such as diversity, listening, manners, responsibility, and teamwork 

Topics for this workshop are adjusted based on grade level.

Application/Résumé Preparation

Application –Filling out an application can be a daunting challenge. This workshop takes the challenge head-on with students learning how to properly fill out an application. 

The workshop topics to choose from:

  • Viewing examples of good and bad applications
  • Practice filling out an application
  • Learning to properly highlight your best skill set 

Résumé –Introduce or expand your students’ knowledge on creating a winning résumé, cover letter and reference sheet.  

The workshop topics to choose from:

  • Tips for writing a résumé
  • What to include and what not to include
  • Learning to sell yourself in words
  • Viewing examples of good and bad résumés
  • Creating a pocket résumé, cover letter and reference sheet (handwritten templates) 

This workshop will also reference the availability of the Career Cruising Résumé resources.  

Job Search Preparation

Finding a job isn’t easy, but this workshop shows students how to make their job search easier by using the Internet or print mediums.

The topics that can be included in your workshop:

  • Teen job facts
  • How and where to look for a job
  • Networking activities
  • Exploring options to find a career that fit

For grades 6th – 8th & 9th – 12th

Interview Preparation

Ok, the job interview is set up—now what? This workshop provides students with the fundamentals needed to prepare for a successful interview. 

The workshop topics to choose from include:

  • Appropriate interview attire
  • Eye contact
  • Interview role playing
  • Preparing to back up your skills by practicing what students have gleaned from this or any other workshops

Keeping a Job Preparation

You want to hear “You’re hired,” not “You’re fired.” The best way to prevent that from happening is for students to learn appropriate office etiquette and work behavior. This workshop provides that opportunity.

Workshop topics to choose from include:

  • Office etiquette
  • Dress code
  • Protocol for dealing with workplace problems
  • Listening
  • Teamwork
  • Office equipment usage 

Customized Workshops

This option allows you to request a workshop that incorporates two or more topics identified above.  Customized workshops work especially well if you have block scheduling with class periods that are longer than one hour.
