Last week, we announced that the Genesee Regional Chamber of Commerce now leads tourism efforts for Flint and Genesee County. We have created a new action group called the Flint-Genesee Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau. We have a dedicated staff and budget, and we have hit the ground running with an aggressive marketing plan. We couldn’t be more excited about this new opportunity!
Bringing the business of tourism under the Regional Chamber umbrella makes sense on many levels. We have an existing staff of marketing and communications professionals. We can increase operational efficiencies and we have a variety of resources from accounting to information technology to human resource management to support the business. In addition, we have been successful at promoting the county as a great place to do business and live. Promoting the region as a travel destination is a natural next step for our messaging. We now have an opportunity to tell our story consistently with one message and one voice by creating a regional brand.

Vanessa Nelson (left), President of Expert Human Resource Consultants, LLC, receives a 2012 Spark Award from Nell Taylor, Business Development Manager for the Genesee Regional Chamber of Commerce.
‘Do what you love and you will be successful’ is a motto that drives success for Vanessa Nelson, President of Expert Human Resource Consultants, LLC (EHRC). Three years ago when Nelson decided to start her human resources company, she wanted to help businesses succeed. At that time, she says she had no idea how many businesses needed help with human resources issues. Now she cites her love of what she does in combination with the needs of businesses in the region as the key to her early success.
“In 2009, when I first decided to step out and start my own business I wasn’t sure how it would work,” said Nelson. “However what I discovered is that there was a great need in the community. Today, I know I made the right decision and I love what I do. Being a business owner has transformed my life.”

Pinterest, the social bookmarking site where users “pin” images onto virtual bulletin boards, has been generating a lot of buzz lately. This month, articles about Pinterest have popped up on such notable Web sites as The Huffington Post, Wired.com and TechCrunch. And the interest isn’t unmerited. Since its launch in March 2010, Pinterest has gained a following of more than 10 million users.
But should tech companies bother to incorporate Pinterest — a site known for cupcake recipes and fashion tips — into their marketing strategies? Absolutely, said Kayla Varcoe, managing director at digital marketing agency Blue Wheel Media in Troy. In fact, Varcoe said her company spends the majority of its time building, managing and interacting with “targeted focus communities” for its clients on social bookmarking sites like Digg, Reddit, Stumbleupon and Pinterest. The value, she said, lies in positioning clients as experts or authorities in their markets.
